I posted on Facebook and Twitter the other day that I finished the first draft of book two. Cue gigantic sigh of relief! I have been plugging along on the draft since before To Whatever End came out and somehow in the short time it took to put out one book and start another, I seemed to forget how much WORK it is to write a novel from start to finish.
It's a bit like having kids. If women remembered with acute clarity the pain of childbirth, we might all be one child families.
Writing a book is damn hard. That's all there is to it. I don't say that because I want a medal or something for finishing (although that would be kind of cool - book shaped finishers medal!). I say it simply because it is true. This new book had a lot of insert-pen-directly-into-chest-bleed-all-over-page writing sessions. The night I finished it, I felt utterly exhausted. But now that I have a working draft, I'm filled with renewed excitement for the story. I'm reading through the beginning again and to my sheer amazement, it isn't terrible! That's always a good sign.
I'm working on some revisions now. I take notes as I write the first draft, reminding me of things that I need to go back and address in earlier chapters. I like to write ahead, rather than getting stuck on rehashing the same scenes over and over. My list of changes tends to get pretty long, and some of those ideas adjust as the story develops, but heading into revisions always feels a little daunting. So far I've been pleasantly surprised. I've gotten through some early areas that I knew would need some pretty hefty rewrites and I think the story is coming together very well.
I wish I had some artwork to share for the new cover design, but the artist is positively swamped and I don't even have the first round of sketches yet. I'm thrilled for him that he's so busy. I have a feeling word is starting to get out that he's freaking talented. As long a I can still get on his schedule, I'm happy he's busy :).
Thanks to everyone who took a chance last week and picked up To Whatever End when it was on sale! It was a very fun week, watching the book climb in the rankings. I'm still a teeny-tiny author, but every new reader is a big dose of awesome, so I'm excited for the new people I've been able to reach. If you're one of them, YAY! I love you!
I also have something new in the works, but I'll be sharing more about that soon. For now, back to revising so I can get this bad boy off to beta readers!
